Basingstoke is a town with immense potential - but our town centre is at a crossroads. Footfall is down, businesses are struggling, and we have an oversupply of retail space across two underperforming shopping centres and our high street.
Transform Basingstoke isn't about rejecting the Council's vision - it builds on it. While the Town Centre Masterplan outlines sensible ideas, we believe more radical thinking is required: demolish The Malls and consolidate retail into Festival Place and Top of Town, then reimagine The Malls site as a bold new green space - drawing inspiration from other UK towns that have turned underused shopping centres into thriving urban parks and cultural destinations.
This is more than a petition. It's a movement to rethink, regenerate and revitalise our town for the future.
Increased footfall and investment by consolidating retail spaces into a more vibrant and attractive high street.
A central green space and modern multi-use venue, providing a hub events, wellbeing, culture and connection - right in the heart of town.
Reclaiming our town's identify with bold thinking and real action. A new, people-first space to bring pride, purpose and investment back to Basingstoke.
01
Establish the Basingstoke Transformation Network, bringing together the Council, local leaders, businesses, landlords and residents. This Network will collate expert input, ensure transparency, and build public momentum.
Alongside this, we will launch a community engagement plan and provide regular updates both online and in print media.
02
Support businesses to relocate from The Malls into vacant units in Festival Place and Top of Town.
This step makes better use of current empty space, supporting struggling retail areas, and lays the groundwork for transformation. Once completed, work can commence on demolishing The Malls.
03
Once The Malls have been demolished, construction can begin on a new multi-purpose space - combing green areas, event capacity, and possibly a new stadium for Basingstoke Town Football Club. The design will reflect the town's identify and include inclusive accessible public features to deliver year-round use and acitivites.
04
Imagine walking out of Basingstoke Train Station and being presented with a vibrant, community-led space leading to a thriving high-steet.
The transformation of Basingstoke will serve as another case study for the nation: proof of what's possible when communities come together with bold ideas, shared purpose, and a refusal to settle for decline.
I'm proud to call Basingstoke my home. For years I have supported the high-street, volunteered as a School Governor and Scout Leader, performed at the Haymarket, and continue to raise two wonderful kids who call it home also.
But like many of you, I've grown frustrated by the empty shops, outdated spaces, and limited action to prevent the decline of our town. I know how much people care about Basingstoke - because I do too.
This campaign isn't about politics or personal gain. It's about ambition and a better future for our children. I believe this is a view shared by many, reimaging our town centre as a place people are proud to visit, work, shop and spend time in. A place for families, businesses, culture and community.
I've launched this campaign because I believe Basingstoke deserves better. And I believe we can build that future - together.
I'm spending a lot of time meeting with community and business leaders as part of this project, and I'd like to hear from you too. Please do get in touch!
If you're a local business owner or resident and want to get in touch to discuss support the Campaign, please do fill out the contact form and we'll aim to get back to you as soon as we can.
